Work at the rhythm of the light

My Italian colleague Selina Angelini (details below the article) has published a blog post on this subject that I found especially interesting and have decided to translate it for you, dear listeners. She starts out with the following question:

"Do you believe that light can help organise your work time?"
Have you ever thought that light can help organize your work time?

That's right: by staying under direct light you lower the levels of serotonin, the hormone that together with others regulates mood and sleep, and you reactivate yourself for your work. All you have to do is use this balance in your favor: so here are some tips for working in the rhythm of light in everyday life.

Follow your circadian cycle
Each of us is more active at a certain time of day, some in the morning, some in the afternoon. Do not try to do as you have always done and try to meet your nature: plan the activities that are most tiring for you at the time of day when you are most efficient, otherwise you will do them anyway, but wasting much more energy and time.

Give energy to your work, work in environments rich in natural light
Working without lots of neon lights helps productivity, the desire to do and, above all, is less tired. Then organize your work space making sure to use natural light as much as possible and bring the desk closer to the window.

Make sure the light is diffused
At the same time, make sure that natural light does not arrive directly on the work surface, on your body or on the monitor of your computer; this way you will avoid annoying reflections, uncomfortable positions to continue to see better and you will not tire your body and eyes.

Recharge your personal energy
Take breaks in direct light, just five minutes in the sun and your work will have a new sprint. It is also an excuse to stretch your legs, take a breath of air, refresh the environment and get new oxygen where you work, especially now that spring is upon us!

When the light goes down, consider the opportunity to close work time
In each day there is a work and a personal time. Both have value and both are important; above all they are worth one in function of the other: to work well you must rest well and vice versa. So when the light goes away, it means it's time to stop.
